ASince von Mering and Minkowsky first demonstrated the occurrence of severe diabetes after fatal pancreatectomy in dogs, animals have served as models of human diabetes it~the need for more research into the etiology and pathogenesis of complications of this disease.
From the etiapathological viewpoint human diabetes should be classified into at least two types, Type I and Type II, Evidence hay accumulated indicating that Type 1 diabetes is closely associated with autoimmune insulitis and that various combination of resis ¡Ý to the action of insulin and reduced capacity to produce enough insulin results in T¡Ý diabetes.
In the present paper an emphasis is placed on the pathogenesis of Type I diabe A sequential changes in subsets of mononuclear cells infiltrating the islets in au¡Ýmmune insulitis in model animals and the preventive affect of nicotinamide on the occurrence of diabetes in NOD mouse.
